Our
STORY
Foto Jovial opened its doors on 1 May 1940, founded by Júlio Vitorino da Silveira, a native of the island of Faial. A dynamic and attentive photographer, he became known for his numerous reports on the landscape, and on the social, cultural and political life of Horta, especially during the Second World War, leaving a unique collection of images that still form part of the island’s collective memory today. In addition to photography, he was also an amateur filmmaker, producing reports on the islands of the former district of Horta and creating the film “Margarida, Amor Fiel” (1949), based on a text by Florêncio Terra and filmed in Flamengos with local amateur actors.
In 1952, Júlio Silveira emigrated to the United States of America, but the legacy he left to Foto Jovial was preserved by the new owners, who continued the activity in the field of photography and digitised the photographic collection they inherited, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
Over the decades, Foto Jovial has established itself as a reference in local commerce, maintaining its photographic laboratory and adding specialised services: from developing and digital printing to event coverage, album production, framing and video work.
As time went by, the company diversified, responding to the needs of the Faial community. Today, in addition to photography, it offers a wide range of products and services, including household appliances, electrical supplies, regional handicrafts, as well as technical services such as assembly, installation of air-conditioning systems and a repair workshop.
Celebrating 85 years of history, Foto Jovial is more than a shop: it is a space that brings together tradition and innovation, values the trust of its customers, and upholds the commitment to serve with quality, dedication and closeness the community that saw it born and grow.
